I have a baby bristlenose pleco in my 10g until he outgrows it, and will then move over to the 50 gallon. Plecos do need drift wood, they chew on it. You don't need a big piece for something the size of a clown pleco- I literally found a downed branch from the maple tree in my back yard about 10 inches long, and maybe 1/2 inch around with a little fork at the top, that had been stripped of all bark, and weathered- brought it in, boiled it in water for the better part of the afternoon, and it is now in my tank and doing just fine. All you need is a small branch. My pleco hangs out on it all the time. You can look for small driftwood branches on the riverbanks, too- just boil them for a bit before putting them in your tank.
actually only panaques need it in their diets. bristlenose just eat whats on the wood.

Well, I plan to switch to an led lighting strip normally used in hobby grade rc applications, so I dont know how well plants will grow. Plus, I have never done live plants, and I dont keep very deep gravel. I dont like the look of deep gravel for some reason. I dont know anything about trimming plants or anything either, I imagine it being a disaster and brown nasty water with me.

Just using the crayfish as an example of their tank conditions. Nowhere did they have a sign for a white crayfish, just some red one an a pic of one that was actually red, not a fading barley visible orange/white.

I dont know exactly how I want to do the shrimp. rcs would look great with the betta in the 5g, but I dont know if he gets along with shrimp yet.

The 10g would look great with like orange, tan, and generally light colored fish. But there is a bit of color in the fake plants. The gravel is white, and various shades of brown, the decor is white and various shades of brown. But there are some areas with red/purple, and green with the fake plants.

an example of a fish that would look great is a glowlight tetra or tiger barbs. But those seem more active, and would probably be better in a bigger tank.

But, I do want some color.

Man, picking fish is hard.

well pick fish that you like and research.

All about fish is the one that has set me straight on tank requirements lately. I definitely trust his/her advice on what goes where.

That is awesome to know, thank you! Which of the pleco species are panaques? More specifically, does the common pleco I inherited who is now in my 75 gallon need wood? I just bought a big chunk this weekend to put in there for him/her... is it even necessary?

I didnt find any shrimp or anything similar other than that crayfish at petco, but it was a really quick look on my way back to filter stuff.

Lol

AAF,

Would glowlight tetras work well in a 10g or are they more active?
If they work, how big of a school should I do of them?
If I do those and say 2 or 3 guppies, is there a centerpiece fish I could get, or not really?

Thanks for all the help so far everyone!

panaque is a species of pleco. if you look up the scientific name the first word would be panaque. clown plecos are panaques. i dont know about commons.

petco might have ghost shrimp. dont get bamboo shrimp if you see them. they need large tanks. ive never kept glowlights. google can tell you though. the only sites i dont trust are ones that are selling the fish.

Petco might have the shrimp, but I know petsmart normally has them but they were all out when I was there. (there is a guy here who has big tanks with big fish and he buys 95% of what they have in stock every week or two). I guess I have some researching to do :).

Watched the betta this morning and he moved around half of the tank and when he reached a certain point he would turn back, almost as if he couldnt go over to the other half. He didnt move very fast, but I watched in horror as he was almost sucked to the filter intake and struggled to get away. I think he would have gotten away fine if he knew beforehand that it would suck him in, but he swam right next to it without knowing and it suprized him. I know fish can learn and stuff, but i dont want to wake up one morning to my favorite fish wrapped around the filter intake and mangled. I am glad I was awake watching him, because a I was ready to jump up and shut off the power and save him from it.

So, needless to say, he is acclimating back to his old tank. He seems to want to get out of the bag and into the tank though. So hopefully he will be happy in his 5g. The lighting is a lot less bright and the water flow is not nearly as powerful. In fact, he wraps himself around the filter intake some times and then gently swims away like it is no big deal.

Ok, so after a long while of acclimating the fish are moved.

Betta from 10 to 5, and he seems to like it more without the powerful filter and stuff.
Guppy from 1g to 10g, happy as can be getting out of that little 1g.
