Tiny Freshwater Fish-Discussion Thread

Very nice list. Grr, I thought I was going to catch you on the hara jerdoni :silly:

To add, I have:

Scarlet badis, Dario dario
Black diamond cory, Corydoras hastatus
Dwarf cory, Corydoras habrosus
Butterfly barb, Barbus hulstaerti
Jae barb, Barbus jae
Glowlight (dwarf) danio, Danio choprae
Celestial pearl danios, Danio margaritatus
Dwarf pencilfish, Nannostomus marginatus
Espi pencilfish, Nannostomus espi
Rosy loach, Tuberoschistura arakanensis**

Schizo, can't believe you missed celestial pearl danios  :grinno:

**Should be kept in nothing less than a 10g, or one of those 6.6g bookshelf tanks (really over 10 gallons).

Don't forget amblyopsids (cavefishes)! Swampfish (Chologaster cornuta) are occasionally available; I've kept spring cavefish (Forbesichthys aggasizii). Unfortunately most or all of the true troglodytic species are rare and protected. These little guys are seldom as much as 2" long and are rather relaxed fish. They do well in the same sort of setup as pygmy sunfish, but prefer cooler water.

I had no idea that the scarlet badis was a different species! Plus, when you google cory, you get the dwarf and the pygmy under the same scientific name, grrrrrrrrrr. I also realized that I listed the list killi as a killifish and not as a livebearer, which is what they actually are.

Looks like I have work do to. Thanks, guys!

Edit: Yeah, I can't either, though in a way I'm glad I did. I have to put a note by them saying to not buy wild caught unless you plan to breed them.

DP-Lupin already mentioned those loaches. He said that we don't know the final size yet, so I won't be putting that on.
Pics and info on the guys DP and noto mentioned tommorow! I'll be asking around the planetcatfish forums for species info.

So, time to update!

Scarlet Badis Dario Dario
From India, this fish is tiny, maxing out at less than an inch. Mostly males are imported. One person said they bred theirs at a PH of 7.0-7.2, and there are people who keep them in tropical and coldwater tanks. A hardy little fish, supposedly possessing tons of personality. It does like low nitrates.

Tolerating a wide variety of temperatures(not coldwater, though!) and maxing out at an inch, this adorable little cory(well, I've yet to see a non-adorable cory) tolerates a wide variety of PHs:

At a max size of 1.6 inches, the butterfly barb appreciates soft water.

I'm pretty tired today and have tons of work to do, so I'll be updating more later.

Why don't I usually put much info on the fishes when I post them up? Because if I don't know any more than can be found be googling, it's better to google than for me to give wrong information. All the info on these guys was obtained through google.

The 6.6 bookshelf aquariums are really over 10 gallons? Or are you just saying that because of it's large footprint? Sorry for my confusion it's been a long day but if I can stock it with more then the 5 ember tetras I got this weekend i'll be a happy girl.:headbang2:

The footprint is large and I agree with DP. It actually looks to be over 10g, not just 6.6. For that kind of tank, 10-15 ember tetras should be fine.

Quick update, discovered the rhinogobius genus. As far as I know, there are only two being sold in captivity. Though preferring temperate water, they will adjust to a wide variety of temps and PHs. Keep in cold and hot water!
