i got my 29 gallon with a stand filter light and heater for 29 bucks at a garage sale next street over from me and gave me 11 bucks of and even 40 bucks is a good price.

Sorry, newbie here. How does copper get in an aquarium ? And if there are pinhole leaks in the silicon, will an aquarium sealant (silicon) do the trick ? Thanks.

I have not had luck doing spot repairs on aquariums. I had a 29 that I just resealed the bottom and part of one corner, and it didn't fix the leak. For my 40, I took all the old stuff out and cleaned it really well before resealing it, that seemed to work fine.
All of my tanks are used. I even buy ones with broken panels, you can get them real cheap. main thing to look for is scratched glass. calcium buildup on the glass can be cleaned up, but look close where it is for scratches from prior removal attempts. it can hide some pretty big scratches.
I am now debating if I should buy a 40 gallin with hood/top and with stand for $40.00.Iit is because I have too many tanks but good deals are hard to pass up..

I've used a tank that was used for a large blue-tongued skink. It was fine.
I'd suggest cleaning it thoroughly with dilute bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). That ought to kill any nasties that may have come along for the ride. Then rinse very well with tap water until the smell of bleach is gone. To be safe, you can just add some extra dechlorinator (tap water conditioner) to the tank when you fill it. Bleach is just a concentrated chlorine compound, so the dechlor will neutralize it.
Also, let it sit for a few days filled with water. That way, you find out about leaks and cracks BEFORE you have anything living in it.
That's all I can think of. If anyone else has any suggestions, or reasons why a reptile tank should be avoided, please share!
