What Works for Me May Not Work for You

1. I do weekly 50% water changes
2. Rarely test my tanks
3. Love my pool filter sand altho it does show off the pooh!
4. Keep Bolivian Rams with my shrimp :lipssealedsmilie: (still have a huge colony so they must be fine)
5. Do not routinely quarantine...
6. Love to over stock and over filter
7. Almost never remember to change out the carbon in my filters
8. Always overfeed (I can't help it!)

This is a "confession" thread! I love it.

I have an all-pink tank. Pink substrate, pink snails, pink live plants. Sue me.

I love this thread! Who cares what anyone thinks - YOU just have to love it. You go girl!:thm:

Refuse to have anything to do with pH up, pH down or aquarium salt. The existence of every one of them is based on myths. If I need salt, the cooking salt cellar is full of it.

Doesn't if feel good! Not holding back and not getting slammed for the way you do things.

Fantastic Responses so far .

Keep um coming

DITTO x 100!!

Not getting slammed is awesome!
Sometimes we have to be reminded that there isn't always just ONE way to do things, especially in this hobby
Everyone should do what works for them, and end up with something THEY enjoy looking at

WTG Pops for starting this type of thread!

Let's see.. what to add?

I deliberately overfeed my fish to let my snails eat the extra amount.
Always overfilter my tanks.
Sometimes put off cleaning a filter until the water output slows down.
I buy whatever plants I want without caring if I have a place for them or not.
Don't care if someone eats certain plants, I'll just get more or pick something different next time.
I grow plants in lighting conditions they're not supposed to tolerate, but they do well anyway. I don't always know why, but it works.
Often sell plants for less than I bought them for because someone else likes them.
Only quarantine fish that seem questionable (which I shouldn't have bought in that case).
I've set up new tanks for plants I've wanted to grow and don't bother to add any fish.
Rinse filter media right under tap water. Otherwise they seem too yucky to go back in.
Leave the lights on as long as I want to (leaving it to the snails to fend off algae... which they must do since that's not been a problem).
Don't always rinse sand substrate before adding it.. if it clouds, I let the filters clear it up. Still, I've never lost an impeller doing this.
Use AquaPlus to dechlor because it's cheaper and goes further.
Pond snails end up going into a tank because I'd rather keep them than kill them.
I'll do a larger water change than I'm supposed to if that's what it takes to clean the substrate better.
Never include snails when estimating stocking/bioload.
QT tanks are always in use for something else, so in worst case events that becomes a bucket with an airstone.
I've bought tanks off Craigslist that I didn't need and had nowhere to place because I found a good deal... will do this again whenever something good comes along if I have the money.
End up keeping fish I got with a used tank I bought instead trading them in at a LFS.
Having a large tank in a bedroom takes priority over the space being used for a dresser.
Always intend to buy timers for my lights, but never actually do it.

  • hate gravel and eco complete, I use sand and never have to rinse it
  • have too many bettas... love them but don't want ALL of them...
  • only test water when I'm bored/something sketch is going on
  • no perception of stocking limit
  • can't keep java ferns alive (java moss and anubias.... fineeee, but no ferns)
  • swoosh filter media in dirty wc water everyyyy week
  • vacuum as much water as i need to clean the substrate.... even if that means, say, a 250% water change (oops! last week's)
  • cross contaminate EVERYTHING! really, who buys separate nets for every tank? I even swap fish with no acclimation... never lost any
  • no quarantine tank... just don't....
  • breaking university housing rules with my tanks... shh....
  • feed the bettas 8-10 pellets (4-5 2x per day)... the 3 corys get 2 broken up wafers per day (1 2x/day)... what to feed the guppies/molly???? no idea, just crush up some food and drop it in........
  • complete idiot at understanding new equipment right away, or understanding what I'm buying before receiving it
  • hmm can't think of any more right now! but... this is a really great thread! very relaxing to read and participate in

My wife overfeeds and she claims I under feed which equals everything out.
Bio wheels and sponge filters are the best!
My ph is 7.0-7.2 and almost everything I have breeds in those parameters.
Water changes are done when I actually clean the tanks every other week.
And as far as plants are concerned, Java moss is the god-given plant!!!! (cant kill the stuff if i tried)
Green scrubbies are also good for nasty algae blooms.

Now see, I can grow most anything BUT Java moss :(

I've tried twice, & it always turns a gross brown
Of course, it was never really green when I got it

30% wc every week vac once a month, no carbon, bio wheels canisters, sponge filters. sometimes over feed, heaters in all tanks, have used epsom salt, other wise no, like prime as tap has high ammonia, rarely test water, tried sand did not like it as plecos kept half the tank bare, went back to gravel. thats all for now.
