MSNBC seems to care less

I dont see why it was the federal goverments responsibility to look after a city anyway.

It wasn't.

Like I said they depend largely on the city government when they start aiding.

The budget was cut in 2005. Even before this they knew that the dikes would not have held for a big hurricane, so why did they not increase their size ahead of time? Instead of doing nothing to help prevent this?

At least they are getting people pulled out, I think yesterday they pulled something like 4,000 out of the city.

Some cities are important to the smooth functioning of the country. Major port cities, for example.

The Corps' budget has been cut repeatedly, by the way, since 2001. I'm not saying I wouldn't have also cut their budget if I were in charge, but I don't think the mayor of N.O is to blame for this.

Like it or not, federal assistance is REQUIRED for many functions of large cities. Your roads and highways, for example, are paid for by state and Federal tax monies. Levees for flood control are the domain, typically, of the Army Corps of Engineers, a federal institution.

********************
Levees were fortified after floods in 1927 and 1965, and Congress approved another ambitious upgrade after a 1995 flood killed six people.

Since 2001, the Army Corps has requested $496 million for that project but the Bush administration only budgeted $166 million, according to figures provided by the office of Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu (news, bio, voting record).

And the white house has increased spending on flood control... Hmm

Now Im not saying the mayor is to blame. But if you have half a million people living on the coast, below sea level, in a potential hurricane zone, then shouldnt the levees be one of the main priorities? Its extremely foolish to rely on someone else for your own life.

I’m not going to get into the pro/con of Bush or Iraq. I read the post and it does contain facts. It just doesn’t have all of them.

First, go hear: http://www.ngb.army.mil/news/story.asp?id=1736 to see the strength of the National Guard. Hear are a few quotes from the site:
“As of today, Louisiana has 65 percent of its troops available for state missions; Mississippi, 60 percent; Alabama, 77 percent; and Florida, 74 percent, Guard officials said.”
“And at the same time, an estimated 75,000 National Guard members are deployed to some 40 countries around the world, including Iraq, where they make up almost one-half the U.S. force, he said.”

Therefore, while Louisiana is not 100% strong, it is not depleted and National Guardsmen are in a lot more countries than Iraq. In addition, just as the National Guard from Louisiana goes to other countries, other states send guardsmen to Louisiana.

Then we get to the government not responding to the levee issue. If you go to CNN.com and then to the video file archives you will find out this issue has been discussed since 1927. Warnings long ignored (2:40) In fairness, CNN does point out Bush cut the funds allocated six years ago, after 10 people drowned, and the Army Core of Engineers is taxed with Iraq. Still “In 1969 Hurricane Camille swept through the region, resulting in many deaths and much property damage.” http://www.bartleby.com/65/ne/NewOrlea.html You can also look at http://www.nola.com/washingaway/harmsway_1.html. Plus, “It was common knowledge around here, that if New Orleans were ever hit by a major hurricane there would be substantial flooding. Additionally, the pump system built after Betsy in the 1960's was NEVER finished.” http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2005/08/new_orleans_as_.html How old was Bush in 1960?

Another thing to remember is the way our government works. Even if we were not in Iraq, there is no proof Congress would have allocated the funs. That is what happens and it even happened to George Washington at Valley Forge. “A bitter George Washington — whose first concern was always his soldiers — would accuse the Congress of "little feeling for the naked and distressed soldiers. I feel superabundantly for them, and from my soul pity those miseries, which it is neither in my power to relieve or prevent."”
http://www.ushistory.org/valleyforge/history/vstory.html

Case in point. Despite Iraq, look what Congress did on August 10th.
“Alaska's Gravina Island is home to 50 people and more than 350 Sitka black-tailed deer. Under the U.S. highway bill passed last month, this group will get a $223 million bridge taller than the Brooklyn Bridge in New York” http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aWA7joXO0bRk&refer=us
Check out the Citizens Against Government Waste Pigbook at http://www.cagw.org/site/PageServer?pagename=reports_pigbook2005. You will find out that there was money. This site shows what funds were allocated to Louisiana http://www.cagw.org/site/FrameSet?style=User&url=http://publications.cagw.org/pigbook/pigbook.php3

I read about that....smells like bacon!

Maybe Louisiana senators need to be a better pig farmers so they can harvest more pork. :joke:

I agree that rebuilding below sea level is a bit silly. I have the same feeling for those folks that rebuild in the floodplains of our own Missouri River which floods every few years. Or those folks that insist on farming in the desert. They all seem to be an odd use of scarce resources.

By the way, great research Longtime!

I don't know how I feel about rebuilding the city in the same spot. I just can't get over the city being completely destroyed. I went there when I was 14 and I was fascinated by the rich culture there. I have been planning to go back as an adult but hadn't got the chance yet. I actually haven't watched the news, I just caught some headlines on my computer so I'm not sure of the entire city is under water or what but the thought of the French Quarter and the Garden District, Lafayette Cemetery, etc. being gone and destroyed makes me cringe. (Not that I don't care about the people) I personally think that NO is the coolest city and it wouldn't be the same somewhere else.

Yeah, you are right.. It's just a city in America -- maybe a couple million American citizens, give or take a few...
Let them fend for themselves. (total sarcasm)

---------------------------------------------

This whole disaster could have been minimized by cranking up those military helicopters and having them on the scene Tuesday morning with supplies under tow! To heck with politics - local or federal, our government failed these people! Water and MRE's could have easily been drop-shipped by helicopters the day after the hurricane.

There's no excuse for this. The leadership of our country and the head of FEMA have failed at handling this disaster.

Those fellow citizens should not have been allowed to stave and thirst for water. Why were there no supply helicopters except for the cameras and Fox News, and MSNBC flying over?

Half a million. And I didnt say that the federal goverment shouldnt be protecting them from other countries or what not. Just that its stupid to put a city below sea level, and hope the federal goverment runs in and builds massive walls around it to protect it.

slip -
Let's stay on Topic here... ..(I may have to call in 'Special Forces' and lock this down.. :D).....

Our government failed to help these people, they waited way too long.

New Orleans has a long history. This hurricane was one of the worst in history!

Have you watched any of the videos (News..) coming out of that area?

Let me put it this way -- are the people in California idiots due to the fact there's a potential major disaster that may occur when the San Andreas Fault decides to move? How about "Tornado Alley"?

No one asked the gov to build walls around New Orleans.

What's sad is the people there needed immediate help, and it was not provided. It's a sad time when we can reach out and help other countries with supplies of food, and not even help our own people!

By the way, I do know it's not a good idea to live 'below sea level', as well as living on a fault line.

No, but they better not be blaming the federal goverment when their home is destroyed by a tornado or earthquake. Its not the federal goverments job to run around and defend everyones homes from mother nature. You should be doing that on your own, as it is in your best interest.

None of these people got aid? We just removed 100 thousand people from new orleans in three days. Id say thats pretty impressive aid.
