Returning to Fish keeping with Fluval Edge

 Np, get some pics up of those CPD's soon!

Finally got around to taking some pics. CPDs are squirrelly s.o.b.'s. Also, there are no deaths, but I've yet to see all 9 (my fish guy Ed threw in one free for good luck) at once. Since their addition to the tank this past Thursday, they hide when I get close to the tank, and generally are staying in the lower quadrant of the water column. I did notice, however, just now turning the lights on to take these pictures, the CPDs came out of hiding, think they are starting to get comfy.

I've changed the lighting cycle, just turning the day LEDs on when I'm home - cutting the time lit in half or sometimes better - so hopefully this algae problem will subside.

Also in good news: I ran tests for the first time since pre-addition of fish, and got what I had expected (mostly hoped) for once in my life. 0, 0, 10. Perfection. At this rate, I expect to reach 20+ppm by this Thursday. I'll conduct a water change then, and am thinking of adding about 4-5 more shrimp. Give Rambo some brethren. Plus by that time Ed will have gotten in some black crystals, and other exotic, uncommon skrimps. You local folk really should check out his shop. His intimacy of the hobby show in his selection and services. Offers species uncommonly found in CT.

Sorry for the blurry pics, camera phone, and these guys are quick.

I'm used to seeing CPDs as gray with red fins, and then the lovely spots, so yeah, I agree with jpap. Of course, there's a slight possibility that the people your LFS sourced from mislabeled fish, and those aren't CPDs.

They most definitely are CPDs. Don't have the resources to take clearer pictures. Definitely have the trademark 'freckles.' Will take pappy's advice and add some more cover when I get those few more shrimp this weekend. Thanks for your input guys, very helpful.

Just saying it's a possibility that someone made a mistake. I found Trigonostigma espei labeled as simple and commonly found harlequin rasboras at an LFS (at which I heard an employee telling a customer that moving tank water from an established tank to a new one will cycle it on Sunday) I sometimes go to. Someone else was also talking about how they found a licorice "betta" in a bowl at an LFS, and it turned out it's actually a licorice gourami, which has different care requirements. Is it likely? Nah.

Oh I hear ya Authmal. In my findings, employees either or uneducated, or just trying to move product. This guy Ed I deal with is the real deal. Knows his stuff and is genuinely pleased to hear me rapping my knowledge back to him. I was also once in my chain LFS back when I original got into the hobby 5-6 years ago and had a 16 year old employee look at me cross-eyed when I was explaining how I was trying to establish a cycle and if I could purchase some hard scape from an established tank in the store. Luckily I met Ed shortly after as he still was working there at the time. Which reminds me I need to call him and update him on my deathless introduction of the CPDs and see if he got any new shrimp in.

Have a good day!

Hello everybody.

All is well with the tank. Finally took a clearer picture of one of the CPDs and also wanted to give Rambo the ammonia warrior some face time. Might pick up a few more shrimp today. Performed a 25% water change yesterday, 0,0,20 beforehand.

If nitrates get taken down to 0ppm on a water change is that ok? Or is the supposed to be a trace (10-20ppm) at all times?

Enjoy the pics :)

My nitrates in my planted shrimp tanks have always been between 15 and 20, and they've never been healthier. If I'm not mistaken, tanks that either aren't planted or that you run carbon in your filters with have lower nitrates? I never run carbon in my filters so I'm not positive.
that cpd is looking like he's colored up a bit tho! Love the shrimp haha
