thanks for the complements:perv:

mellowvision are you saying I should make another tank for the purple rock crab?

Im not certain what type of anenome it is but it could be this(from seafreinds.org.nz)
0608213t.jpg

'olive actinia anemone (Isactinia olivacea) likes to live in the burrows of piddock shells, and any place where it can withdraw fully(mine does not do this). It is common on the West Coast where its colour is usually brown but it is also found in emerald green.'

But I doubt it.. I think it is probably too small and plain for anyone to document in detail.

This is an awesome thread. Its really cool to watch it come to fruition. Nice job!

heres the big guy of the tank, he is becoming tamer and comes out to be hand fed

its huge claw makes a sound like a firecracker, I would name it Thor but that would be unfair to the fish, frog and cat so I named it pistol shrimp..

You sure this isnt a little mantis shrimp?
If you start finding crab parts around the tank, I'd put my money on him!!

its not a mantis shrimp, they don't have claws, but rather arms. it shoulds like a pistol shrimp though.

here's what my mantis shrimp looks like(photo taken by a friend while it was still in the shop) i haven't heard a single noise from him.

it is a pistol shrimp, here is a pic of one of the smaller pair that live in the lower pool-

not as interesting as a mantis(not available in nz) but it has an incredible claw.

what are the sizes of the crabs and shrimp?isn't there a risk of them attacking each other?

the biggest pistol shrimp is about 50mm long and it lives in the upper pool, it can get down the waterfall into the lower pool but the two smaller pistols(about 40mm) gang up on it and chase it back. I have seen the pistol shrimps chase the crabs and have a go at the glass shrimp. The crabs spend most of their time on the land now, which is good because they take their bioload out of the water with them..

this thing is the biggest danger-

it has tripled in size and I witnessed it capturing and devouring a crab that climbed onto its rock. I dont know how to remove it though because it withdraws into a hole if threatened. plus it stings..
