SUNSUN HW-302 Outside Filter setup & test

Thanks for your replies! I definitely want this now! I just have to convince my husband to let me spend some more money on my tank...lol. I am not sure what a ball valve is but I am going to look it up...hopefully it is not something that is hard to do.

This is the ball valve. Makw sure to get the threaded kind for 3/4 inch pipe. It came from Home Depot. There are two other parts not in the plumbing section that. But they are nylon bur fittings (I forget what they are called). Use teflon tape to put the threaded parts together. The tubing fits over the bur fitting snug enough that there are no worries. If you think you need it you could use hose clamps, but they are not necessary.

I can get you a picture of my set up if you like.

Best wishes,
Wes

Oh thank you for the pic! I am going to order the filter now. Do you thing I should try it out first to test the flow or just try to add that thing to it before I try it? Also, a pic of your setup would be very helpful :)

It only takes a couple of minutes to install. I would at least have the parts on hand to install as you try out the flow. That way if the flow is too strong. You can disconect the lines; Drain them; Cut the out flow line; Install the valve parts and your back in business without too long of an interuption of filtration.

I will get that pic to you soon. Yoou have some time. Go ahead and order.

Best wishes,
Wes

So here are the instal pix of the valve.
Sorry for the delay.

When you go to get your valve supplies I would suggest that you take a small sample (about a three inch section) of the hose with you the place you intend to buy your parts. I found all of my parts at HD for about $13.00. It included the valve, the two fittings, teflon tape, and plummers grease (you'll need this for future use when you clean the filter. use it on the "O" rings and other places that might get stuck. Be very careful with the baskets they are a very close fit and if you try to force them they will break.

Below is how I set mine up on the out flow from the SunSun Filter. It shows the valve with the two elbow bur fittings. Notice that I do not have any hose clamps. The fit is tights enough that there is no leakage of any kind possible.

Below is a hot of the Burr fitting.

I hope you got your SunSun. I really like mine. It is working really well for my 20 long. I currenly keep Kuhlis and RCS and plan to house some other fishes in the future.

Best wishes,
Wes

Wes -

Thanks for those pics!! I run a 302 by Perfect (aka SunSun and whatever else they go by) and wanted to get some ball valves to control the flow and to shutoff for maintenance. You rock!

Thank you so much for the pics! I just have a few questions...

On this pic...
ball valve.jpg

Is the number 1 and 3 the same piece? And is number 2 the ball valve and nothing else? Also where exactly to I put these pieces? Is is somewhere just in the middle of the hose? Which hose...in or out? Sorry for the dumb questions but I have no idea what I am doing and I haven't even ever seen a canister filter in real life before (haven't received mine yet). Also, I wanted to put pot scrubbies in the filter but I couldn't find them so I bought the bath pouf's instead...will those work? They are made out of nylon netting kind of like a pot scrubbie.

yes 1 and 3 are the same and 2 is the ball valve. you can get these parts at any hardware store i buy mine at ace hardware the ball valve is 3.29 and the 1 and 3 fittings are 49 cents each might be a bit cheaper at home depot. dont forget to glue them together or use some pipe tape to make sure the ends dont leak.
if you have a dollar store they carry those pot scrubbies i think you get 8 in a pack at my local dollar store for you guessed it just 1.00 LOL

I have YET to find these at the multiple dollar stores I tried. Needless to say I had to order them online for $0.50/each after shipping.

I went to the biggest dollar store around and couldn't find them. That's why I got the bath poufs instead. They are made out of nylon mesh so I figured why not! I would have gone to more stores but my husband brought me and he is not too fond of shopping so I figured I better not press my luck.

I just hope I can figure this ball valve system out. I have never done anything like this before.
