SUNSUN HW-302 Outside Filter setup & test

Lol this is a great filter but you gotta love them Chinese folk! lol the box mine came in has such screwy english its hilarious!

I tossed the box and most of the filter media the second I opened mine. But I had it up and running in about 20 minutes :)

Best Regards,
Patrick

Just got one of these in the mail yesterday. it's still in the "filtering a bucket of water on my bar" stage, but will be put into my 16 gallon planted soonest! :)

If you're having trouble getting your cannister to start pumping due to air lock, simply fill the cannister with water up to the ridge where the top and bottom pieces seal together, plug in, and go.

What is the valve block? Maybe that's the problem I can't get anything going with this.
Could the problem be I am using this in a 55 gal turtle tank that is about 1/3 full. Could the water level not be high enough? The strainer is about 3 inches underwater.. I filled it with water but can't seem to get it going---

Fill the aquarium all the way to the top like it is supposed to be for canister filters and try again.

Is the filter at the same level as the tank or on the floor?

Suck on the output til the water is primed. It' having trouble lifting the water 12inches up the side of the 1/3 full 55.

Yeah I know - yuk - but it is new....

Hello,

I am new here...this is my first post :)

I really want to get one of these filters now after reading this thread. I currently have an internal filter but the water flow is way too much and I can't seem to slow it down. What I need to know is will this 302 model have too much flow for a 20 gallon high with plants and guppies? I really want to be able to decorate my tank for what is appealing instead of what will block the flow and keep the fish from a tornado in the tank....lol. Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Welcome taralm13, this filter may seem too much for a twenty high but will work fine. It should come with a spraybar that may need to be tweaked. To reduce the flow just add a second set of holes spraying down and/or increase the diameter of the exsisting ones. A sponge prefilter will minimize the loss of baby guppies.

Diy spraybar that stretches across the whole length of the back of the tank and you should be good. definitely look for some hydropinics stores nearby and pick up some Hydroton for Biomedia. its super cheap and effective.

Another way to reduce the flow is to put a ball valve on the out flow side of the filter so you can adjust the flow the way you want it. Putting the valve on the out flow side will allow water to always get to the motor/impeller soas to not burn it out prematurely.

Best wishes,
Wes
