clown killies

its a no no on that miracle grow, it has chemicals that will kill the frys once they hatch, its poison. some people say you can really boiled it good, but i don't trust any chemicals that the small frys might encounter. any peat moss that is ORGANIC, but i trust the CANADIAN brand, i'm not from canada but i heard when they say ORGANIC it means its pure ORGANIC, and i have no problem with my frys, i got almost 100 percent success

I've got clowns in 4 tanks currently... but the bull male has been in a densely planted 5 gallon, with an 80gph filter and the surface covered in floating plants, with 2 females, for nearly a year and a half. Ideally, the females would get a break, but with the dense plants they do ok.

Yes, the hikari first bites is a great staple to have on hand... but I'm pretty sure it's not enough for the first 5 days of life. During that time, if the tank is barren of infusoria, and you have no culture of live rotifers or similar, it's unlikely that many fry will make it. They really prefer live food. After 10 days or so, and right through adulthood, BBS are a favorite. The larger adults go nuts for fruit flies too, much more so than blood worms, which seem to take a long time for them to chew down.

I've seen clown eggs for sale in peat... so I'm going to guess that even though it's not the most common practice, that it should work out ok. Very interested to see your results. I've wanted to do this too, but have been discouraged by the insanely small size of the eggs. Clown eggs make snail eggs look ginormous. I rarely spot an egg. Granted, my tank is a little over run with algae. great for the fry to hide, but makes it impossible to find the eggs.

I'm going to try mops next. I think being able to move the mop from one tank to another without disturbing the eggs ought to help improve yield considerably.
 
right now, i'm tryng this peat moss version with water, i let the peat moss settle down in the bottom of a small plastic tub and let the eggs hatch there, if i see more eggs in the mop i will try the dry process, but i wanna see how this one works out, i have 2.5 gallon tank standing by with java moss and dry almond leaf, by the time they hatch that small tank should have infusoria ready, i'll use a strong light so i can spot those frys thats why i use a small plastic tub so i can spot them right away.
 
FYI to mademan2 on the pipette: in case you didnt know, Pets Plus on Ward has 'em! They were up front by the register.

today i put 10 eggs as a trial on a dry peat moss incubation, i wanna see which method does better. they breed like crazy right now, because i feed them 4 times daily with diffrent foods, like my own culture DAPHNIA, MOSQUITO LARVAE, DRY BLOODWORMS and BABY BRINE SHRIMP. the MOSQUITO LARVAE since here in hawaii is always tropical all you have to do is put a small tub outside with peat moss or garden soil in the water watch daily for larvae:) one of the best food for small killies. my juvenile GOLDEN PANCHAX feast on it too.

You're breeding mosquitoes??? :22_yikes: I'm about to :argue: - nah, not really. You must not live on the windward side, huh? I grew up with a healthy fear of the bloodsuckers. I'd love to have mosquito larvae for my fish... but I just can't bring myself to do it! :screwy: Although I've been thinking of checking out some streams for shrimp...

i scoop them daily to make sure they won't go to the next stage, if it gets so much i just close the lid until i'm ready to have more larvae again
