    Amazon Sword - leaf discoloration

Please excuse the sideways photos. It's an iPhone / PC issue and I don't know how to fix it (2nd attempt). Also, the white dots on the leaves are just sand - just did a water change.

Hi all, I haven't been very active on this forum for a while, but I'm hoping for some opinions from you plant experts. [Tank - 120cm long - 29 gallon or 30 gallon (?), 90W of T8 fluoros, DIY CO2, EI ferts and Fluorish Comprehensive Supplement] I have a sword (Echino. bleheri?) that is not...

Nitrates can be present in your local water supply. 5ppm is not a high level in aquarium terms.

just how much ben bacteria lives in the substrate?

I'd be interested to see some reputable sources on this question. But really, if you have enough space to accommodate enough bacteria to break down all the waste, then you're fine. If you lose some bacteria when removing substrate, the system should bounce back fine if there's room for more...

    Driftwood in my tank.

I think driftwood will tend to lower pH because it is (slowly) decaying, and it is a continuing process. Hardness, on the other hand, is a measure of the numbers of mineral ions in water, and I don't think this is directly affected by driftwood

    Algae?

I've only had diatoms in new tanks, and they go away on their own - as suggested, they seem to be a symptom of a tank that has not stabilised yet. May not be worth disrupting the tank to deal with them.

    Neon tetra, jumpers?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to remove the surviving fish to a safer location.

    Pygmy Cories

Agree with jpappy, I have pandas and peppers in the same tank and they do tend to separate by species. But I now have three of each, and they seem perfectly okay in these numbers. And the pygmy is more of a free-swimming species than other cories, I think.

help, strange alien creatures in my tank!!!

In my experience, they died off as tanks matured, in a week or so. And they never harmed my fish, including small tetras.
