    floating plants for livebearer aquarium

almost any stem plant can be grown as a floater. Elodea, water sprite and wisteria are great floaters for fry.

    Easy Plants

Either way it should survive in your tank. If it looks like the ball has short green rabbit fur, its a true Marimo ball. If it looks like a wadded up ball of strings with tiny leaves, then its a wadded up ball of Java moss. By the way, having a lot of light and no fertilizers or CO2 will not be...

What have you got for substrate?

Please help me identify these plants and give advice.

I think the last one is guppy grass or Naja grass. It's mostly used as a floating plant but you can plant it, too. I would use sand, but I'm not sure if they need rooot tabs if they're planted in the substrate.

    Bamboo in a tank?

Yes, you can use a polyurethane based varnish to seal bamboo (or any wood) without any problems. Just make sure that you let it cure fully, that it doesn't contain any mold or mildew inhibitors, and that it is clear not tinted before you put it into the tank. Polyurethane is completely inert and...

    CO2 idea

:iagree: Some PH's also have a venturi hole that your CO2 can be run to, but the impeller will do a better job of mixing the CO2 into the water. Also agree with the W/D filter de-gassing the CO2. Even if its sealed off, it will take quite a while for the CO2 in the water to reach an...

    Lighting Strip

If you're handy you can always take the lamp and ballast out of the fixture and put in a couple of screw-in CFL bulbs. Or there are numerous 24" fixtures available online. But you will probably need to dose ferts and CO2 for some of those.

    New cover/light - recommendation

You're probably not going to find much of a middle ground for under $40.00, but if you're handy you can definitely upgrade for about that amount with a 4ft fluorescent shop light retro-fitted into a homemade hood.

    Water change routine

Like I stated in another thread of yours, it once again depends on how high-tech your tank is. I have around 1 WPG with no CO2 (obviously), only fishfood for fertilizer, and a gravel capped soil substrate and I never change the water. All of the plants are growing great (just had to trim a lot...

    New cover/light - recommendation

There are several rules of thumb for WPG. They're actually a balancing act between light, fertilizers and CO2 depending on what you want from your plants. What do you want from your plants? Little to no maintenance with little growth, a little bit of tinkering with more growth, or lot's of...

    Plant Fungus

White, fuzzy, slimy stuff is definitely fungus, but it was probably not what killed it, just eating the dead parts. Banana plants are weird to me. I've had some do great and others completely melt for no reason. And all were in the same tank. What does the fungus on your other plants look like...

    Lighting on my planted tank

500W of MH is pretty bright, but not too bright on a 180. You're going to need to add fertilizers and CO2, though, or you will definitely get algae.

    Plant Fungus

Fungal infections in aquatic plants are very rare (I've never seen or heard of any) and aquatic fungi generally only consume dead and decaying material. What leads you to believe you have a plant fungus?

    Val trouble with soft water...

Vals use the carbonates in hardwater as a source of Carbon. Injecting CO2 may help.

    Lighting and CO2????

New growth is usually a brighter color than the mature growth.

oops fell for a semi-aquatic plant

It would have to be a taaallllll plant to break the surface in a 55.

14 Watt Light on 5.5 Gallon Tank.

The WPG rule doesn't really apply to smaller tanks. The amount of lumens per watt declines on the lower wattage fluorescent lighting. Plus with the amount of light lost to re-strike, reflection, and spill-over, 14W is not going to push you into using CO2. Even if it did, floaters get their CO2...

55Gal Serenity Passion 56k look out

Nice job! I'm not sure what you mean by bending, everything in those pictures looks magnificent. In higher light and rich CO2 environments, some stem plants have a tendency to grow laterally rather than up and down, so maybe this is what you're observing. The ground cover you have is some sort...
